In a few days I fly off to Thailand to begin my 5 month teaching commitment. 5 months in the grand scheme of things is short. Well, for me, a girl who chose a 10 minute commute to college and has never ventured far from her family, 5 months could just be a lifetime. I plan to make this an adventure of a lifetime.
I’ll be staying in Tak province, teaching math to secondary students. Thailand is a conservative country, so much so that I am only allowed to wear knee length dresses and skirts for teaching. Originally I prepared myself to teach english but when I contacted the coordinator at my school I was informed I would be teaching math. I love math, my undergraduate degree is in math but teaching it to Thai students…this could be a challenge.
I’ve spent the last week getting my things together, seeing close friends and spending time with family. I remember when I made the decision five months ago to apply to the program. I’m still sort of in shock that I did it. I don’t know if the reality will hit me until I am on the plane. I’ve never been to Asia, but I did study abroad for three months with my sister in England, and I loved every second of it.
I know this is going to be a wonderful experience, but I also know it won’t all be cake and cookies. I’m looking forward to this new adventure, and I plan to document every part of it :O)
