Taoo-huu

Taoo-hu! Taoo-hu! Can’t you understand me? Maybe this will help.

Yes, tofu! I took another cooking class and tofu was the star of all the dishes I made. Lili was interested in taking a class and of course I was happy to do another one. We booked an evening class at the Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts.

Before class, excited and sipping on complimentary chrysanthemum tea

Lili’s Menu

Steamed Chicken with Mixed Herbs (GaiĀ Nuang Sa Mun Pai)

Panang Curry with Pork (Penang Moo)

Spicy Fish Soup with Sweet Basil (Tom Yum Pla) Red Snapper Fish

Fried Rice with Prawns (Khao Phad Koong)

Panang Curry Ingredients

My Menu

Steamed tofu with mixed herbs (Taoo-huu Nuang Sa Mun Pai)

Panang Curry with Tofu (Panang Taoo-huu)

Spicy Tofu Soup with Sweet Basil (Tom Yum Taoo-huu)

Fried Rice with- drumroll please- TOFU! (Khao Pad Taoo-huu)

Tofu is quite versatile as you can see and quite filling as well. We made very large portions which meant a lot of tofu. Lil really enjoyed the fried rice, but the soup and curry were a bit too spicy for her liking. Our instructor Gino, which I highly doubt is not how you spell his name, because he is Thai not Italian but when he said his name it sounded like Gino, said that Nuang Sa Mun Pai (mixed herbs) was a special dish not available in many restaurants but very healthy. Lili enjoyed her chicken version and I enjoyed mine with tofu, now to duplicate it when we get back to the states!

The cooking class was awesome but the real fun began when we got lost coming back to our hotel… on a motorbike at night. No it was not fun, well I think Lili enjoyed it a little and I enjoyed driving but I was worried we were going to end up circling the island for a few hours. Really, it only took us about 30 minutes to get back and many Thai’s and farangs pointed us to Big Buddha Beach where we are staying. Thank heavens! I wanted Lil to take our little pink rental whip out for a ride but the woman at our hotel said if she has never driven, it’s probably not the best idea! Maybe tomorrow morning we can have a little instructional session of our own in the parking lot :O)

It wouldn’t be right if Lil didn’t get to drive the motorbike just a little while in Thailand! Don’t worry Mom and Dad we have a helmet. Just one though- the passenger doesn’t need one! Oh and don’t be alarmed that the chin strap doesn’t really buckle…minor details :-O

We specifically asked for the pink one!
